Kong Rong Giving Up the Pear: Ancient Wisdom on Humility and Respect

There’s something about watching a young child demonstrate wisdom that adults struggle to muster that just stops you in your tracks. When I first read about Kong Rong and the pears, I found myself wondering how a child could possess such clarity about something that many of us spend entire lifetimes trying to learn. The story has been told in Chinese households for nearly two thousand years, and it still hits with the same force today as it did when it was first recorded.

Kong Rong lived during the late Eastern Han Dynasty, a time of considerable political turmoil and social upheaval in China. Born in 153 CE, he would go on to become one of the most celebrated scholars and officials of his age, known not just for his intellectual abilities but for his extraordinary moral character. And according to the historical record, that moral character was evident from the very beginning.
