Lidong (Beginning of Winter): Nourishing Your Inner Fire for the Cold Months

November 7th marks a clear turning point. The weather has definitively shifted, the days are getting shorter at an accelerating pace, and there’s no denying it anymore: winter is here. In the Chinese solar term system, this moment is called Lidong — the Beginning of Winter. It’s one of the most important solar terms of the year, marking the official start of the winter season and inviting us to shift into a new way of living that honors the cold months ahead.

There’s a particular quality to these early November days. The trees are mostly bare now, their branches reaching toward gray skies. The first frost has come and gone, sometimes multiple times. The days are short, the mornings are cold, and there’s an unmistakable feeling that a major seasonal shift has occurred. Winter isn’t coming — it’s here.
